Aamir Khan makes it on ‘Time’
Mumbai: Aamir Khan, Bollywood’s Mr.Perfectionist had another feather in his cap. He has become the first male Indian actor to be featured on US Time magazine’s cover, for taking up social issues on his show ‘Satyamev Jayate ‘. Before Aamir made it to ‘Times Magazine’ cover, popular Bollywood actors Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Parveen Babi featured on Time’s cover.The actor is featured on the cover of Time with the caption Khan’s Quest. Times describes him as, “He’s breaking the Bollywood mold by tackling India’s social evils. Can one actor change a nation?”
Aamir’s show touched upon various burning social issues that are relevant in the society like female foeticide, dowry, medial malpractices etc. His shows opened the eyes of government of Rajasthan which ordered fast track courts to resolve pending female foeticide cases in the state. Aamir was also invited to the parliament to discuss issue of Fdi in pharmaceuticals. Aamir also met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to emphasise the plight of manual scavengers.The actor, in addition to garnering immense praise and sky-rocketing viewership, has also had to face the ire of certain communities, the Indian Medical Association and a Khap of Haryana being examples of the same.
Parveen Babi featured on Time cover in July 1976 and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan was featured in 2003.Sachin Tendulkar was the last Indian celebrity to make on the Time’s cover. Other Indians who featured were Sania Mirza, Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi and Narendra Modi. Mahatma Gandhi made to the cover of Time Magazine three times and was declared Man Of The Year in 1930.
