The clash of Bollywood Divas
New York: Growing upin the nineties, girls had only 2 idols. It was either the Roop Ki Rani Sridevior the Dhak Dhak girl Madhuri. Sri can be truly called the first female superstar of Bollywood. Who can forget her mischievous take on ‘Seeta aur Geeta’ in ‘Chaalbaaz’.
As Sri was climbing up the silvery staircase to stardom, following quietly behind with determination and talent was Mumbai ki Mulgi, Madhuri. Nobody guessed that the ‘EK do teen’ girl from ‘Tezaab’would become number ‘ek’ soon. Powerful performances in ‘Dil’ and‘Beta’ put Madhuri at the top and reigning queen Sri had competition.
Thus started the rivalry between the two. Unlike today’s actresses, who openly acknowledge their rivals, both Sridevi and Madhuri remained graceful in their conduct to each other always. This is the stuff true divas are made of.
Marriage and motherhood took these stars away. (Come to think, Sridevi has 2 daughters and Madhuri two sons….rivalry at its height?) But the call of fans and the arclights was too strong to be unheeded. Madhuri came back with ‘Aaja Nachle’ and ‘Jhalak Dikhla Jaa’
Sridevi is preparing for her comeback film ‘English-Vinglish’. This has made film makers approach Madhuri to stand opposite Sri. Those young girls of the nineties are women today, but what remains unchanged is their loyalty to their respective idols. We look forward to the round 2 between the 2 divas. But they are both winners in their own way and also in our hearts.
