KurbaanFriday always holds a surprise for anyone following the Bollywood Trade. After the unprecedented success of ‘Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani’, the movie that carried the maximum buzz was ‘Kurbaan’ and it was all set to become one of the biggest openers of 2009.

‘Kurbaan’ started off well on Thursday as the 500-odd paid preview shows across the country fetched a decent 1.25 crores. This is the second highest preview show business after ‘Ghajini’. So, it was naturally expected that ‘Kurbaan’ would have a hurricane start at the box office on Friday. It was supposed to have nearly 90-100% opening at all major cities. But the first day early trends suggest that the start has been pretty fair if not huge.

The morning shows went for 70-80% at multiplexes and around 60-70% at single screens; at least 15-20% lower than what was expected. There was dip in the afternoon shows with 60-70% occupancy in multiplexes and 50% in single screens.

However, the film has got some good reviews from the film critics and seems to be enjoying some word of mouth as well. This is reflected in the advance booking for the Friday evening shows. At the time of filing this report (Nov 20, 4:30 pm) most of the plexes are reporting an advance of 70% already for the late evening/night shows.

Business is very good in major metros like Delhi, Mumbai and Hyderabad. However, single screens still remain a source of concern for ‘Kurbaan’, which has a massive release in India with 1000 prints.

Keep watching this space for the latest box office updates of ‘Kurbaan’.
