Ashutosh GowarikarB K Modi, ex-owner of Spice Mobile, had announced a film on Buddha at $120 million last year at the Cannes film festival. It was his dream project and he was in talks with the likes of Richard Gere, one of the several celebrity followers of the Dalai Lama, and preacher-at-large Deepak Chopra for the venture.

He had even shifted residence to Beverly Hills for a while. But the film made no progress. Modi, who has now relocated to Singapore, says the film has got a new lease of life as he has tied up with Ashutosh Gowarikar, one of Bollywood’s successful directors. If the same budget that was announced is still maintained, it will cost a whopping Rs. 600 crore. That would easily make it one of the most expensive films of all time.

Gowarikar who has made hit films like Lagaan and Jodha Akbar remained unavailable for comments, but he has beaten the recession by signing this multi-crore mega deal. Good going…
