Now, Its Akshay Kumar v/s Salman Khan
Salman Khan is set to host the local version of the game show Power of 10. Akshay Kumar has been roped in to host the desi version of Fear Factor at a whopping Rs 1.5 crore per episode. But will these two top filmstars click on the small screen as far as TRPs go? That’s the big question.
The fact is that not too many film actors who’ve taken to TV for a brief stint have clicked. Now we aren’t talking about actors who are guests and judges on TV these days! Barring Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan, other stars who attempted to host reality shows couldn’t make the TRPs swing in their favour. After Big B’s success as the host of Kaun Banega Crorepati, other shows sprung up. Sawaal Dus Crore Ka with Manisha Koirala, who was a big star at that time, and Anupam Kher was one such show. Jeeto Chappad Phad Ke with Govinda was another big show. But none could really work the magic of KBC.
Madhuri Dixit, the number one heroine at that time, anchored Kahin Naa Kahin Koi Hai, a show on matchmaking. Even die-hard Madhuri fans were bored within the first few episodes!
Some stars even made their acting debut on TV. Sridevi probably made the biggest mistake of her life acting in the show Malini Iyer. Karisma Kapoor charged a bomb to do Karishma — Miracles Of Destiny, but it didn’t do much for the channel. Raveena Tandon’s Sahib Biwi Ghulam too didn’t click.
What’s it about film stars and television? They are so hugely popular, yet their success rate on TV as actors/hosts is pretty low. Sandiip Sikcand, creative head (fiction) of a production house, explains, “Successful characters on TV, be it a Tulsi or a Parvati, have always been fresh faces at that time. There was no image around them. However, a popular film actor has an image already and is basically considered a star. So when that person plays a middle class housewife, it clashes with the image the audience already has of her. TV needs fresh faces and raw talent. As far as anchoring is concerned, Amitabh Bachchan and SRK have the persona. Also, in their shows, they are very powerful, they are the quiz masters. And that supplements the powerful image they have in people’s minds.” Well, now let’s wait for Sallu and Akki. Will they make a mark? Only time will tell.
